Island Farm’s 2017 Season is Approaching

girl on farmFor young families visiting us in Nags Head, OBX, one place we always recommend visiting is Island Farm. Located less than 15 minutes away from Surf Side Hotel, it offers an educational and fun glimpse into the past.

This living history site allows visitors to step back in time to the mid-1800s when the Etheridge family lived on the farm.

From the farmhouse to the cookhouse, dairy, barns and blacksmith shop, everything has been transformed to its original conditions, providing a complete vision of what life was like on Roanoke Island in the 1800s.

Opening day of the 2017 season takes place on Tuesday, April 4 and includes activities like chicken feeding, ox-drawn wagon rides, and 19th century games!

Your children will love the opportunity to meet the farms resident chickens, oxen, sheep, cows and ponies, as well as the chance to play old-fashioned games and enjoy treats baked right on site in the cookhouse.

One of the farm’s first big events of the season is Sheep Shearing Day, and if your children are big animal lovers, this isn’t something they will want to miss! Taking place on Saturday, April 29, 2017, the event lets you see how sheep are sheared and help out with the fleece washing and spinning process.

Open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from April 4 to November 25, 2017, Island Farm is a must-visit place in OBX for families with young children. Admission is $8 per person, and children age five and under are free.

To learn about all the special events going on at the farm this year, check out their Special Programs Calendar here. From Independence Day to Thanksgiving, there are unique learning experiences to match every season!

While you’re on Roanoke Island for the day, we also recommend visiting Roanoke Island Festival Park and the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island with your family.

Now that your whole family is looking forward to their spring vacation all that’s left to do is book your stay at Surf Side Hotel! Located right on the beach in Nags Head, OBX, it is the perfect place to relax and unwind after exciting days of family adventure in the area.
