Here in the Outer Banks, we have quite the flight history. Of course, most people know that the famous Wright brothers took their first flight here, but did you know that NASA scientist, Francis Rogallo invented the flexible wing here, as well? Enjoy the sport of hang gliding or simply watching stunt and power kites float across the sky? This is the man that you have to thank!
Join us in celebrating Rogallo’s legacy here in Nags Head, NC during the first weekend of June. The Rogallo Kite Festival will take place from Friday, June 5th until Sunday, June 7, 2015, 10pm-4pm at Jockey’s Ridge Crossing and Jockey’s Ridge State Park. This is the event’s 33rd consecutive year and it just keeps getting bigger and better!
If you’re planning to be in the area at the time, you’ll definitely want to stop out – especially since this is a free event! So many incredible 30-100ft kites will be flown from the top of Jockey’s Ridge; stop out to watch or get the kids to jump right in and take advantage of the free stunt kite lessons and kitemaking class.
If you ask us, this is the kind of event that just screams summer! Book your stay with Surf Side Hotel today and enjoy the fruits of Francis Rogallo’s labor during your upcoming OBX vacation! We can almost guarantee that you’ll have an amazing time!
