Planning a trip to the Outer Banks this fall? You’ll definitely want to check out the OBX Brewtag, held at the Soundside event site in Nags Head – just a six minute walk from our Surf Side Hotel. Not only will you get an opportunity to sample some amazing craft beers, but you will get to watch as teams compete to see whose homemade flying device can soar farther. Oh, did we mention that each device is weighed down by an empty 1/6 keg barrel?
Presented by Kitty Hawk Kites, The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau and BrewThru, this annual event is now in its third year and is only gaining momentum. Each year, teams of ambitious amateurs do their best to honor the work of Francis and Gertrude Rogallo, the inventors of the flexible wing. Of course, the best way to do this is by gathering a bunch of beer and flight enthusiasts here in the Outer Banks and launching keg barrels from a platform!
If you want to check out the beer garden, however, $20 will get you a Brew Card and your choice of four full beers or 12 tastings. 100% of proceeds made from the Brew Cards will be donated to the Rogallo Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the Rogallos and preserving their records, artifacts and research. The organization aims to share the couple’s story and protect the legacy of free flight.
There are plenty of activities to keep them entertained between keg launches. From face painting and crafts to the portable rock climbing wall and a chance to ride on the mechanical surfing shark, your kids won’t even have a second to think about being bored.
So join us here in the Outer Banks this fall! With such a fun-filled event taking place so close to the Surf Side Hotel, how could you possibly pass it up? Check out the OBX Brewtag’s official website for more information, and then head right back here to book your reservation. We can’t wait to see you!
