Meet Dawn Reichert

Surf Side Hotel

Throughout the year, we’ll be shining a spotlight on some of our amazing people. We thought you’d like to get to know the staff at Surf Side Hotel better. They are the heart of our hotel and why we achieve incredible accolades and high Trip Advisor ratings.

We interviewed Dawn Reichert, General Manager at Surf Side Hotel, to kick off this series. The interview was by phone during the Coronavirus (Covid-19)pandemic. She was on her way to work even though the Surf Side Hotel is temporarily closed. When the hotel reopens soon, you’ll be able to meet Dawn Reichert in person.

Personally Speaking

How are you and your loved ones doing/coping during this time?
Dawn Reichert: Lloyd and I are doing great. No real impact to our day to day life, but definitely a new topic of conversation.

At Surf Side Hotel

How long is your hotel closed for?
DR: Currently the Governor’s stay at home order is in affect till April 29th. We have been accepting reservations after this date, but again the opening is based on our federal & local government guidelines. Guests can reach us via email or by calling 252-441-2105 and leaving a detailed message. A Surf Side Hotel representative will reply promptly.

Are you still on site and if so, what are your hours?
DR: We are currently closed, but a small group of us are at Surf Side Hotel working on updates, repairs and deep cleaning. We are following all guidelines recommended by the CDC and the local health department to work safely and stay healthy.

Which staff are still working onsite?
DR: We have a small staff working on a list of tasks. From maintenance to thorough cleaning and updates.

What extra safety and cleanliness precautions have you taken there?
DR: We have been going through every room and space for full sanitization and cleanings. We’re taking queues and guidelines from the CDC and local health department for full precautions. This place will be sparkling!

The Outer Banks

What is it like in Nags Head right now?
DR: Honestly, half of us are working and the other half look like they are on vacation. You still see a few people out exercising or driving somewhere. It’s surreal.

Beating COVID-19

What is your best advice for staying positive during this challenging time?
DR: I think staying focused on getting back to normalcy – when we can return to vacationing! For me personally, it’s focusing on when the Surf Side Hotel doors can open again. My staff takes great pride in their jobs. Layoffs were the hardest thing. We are so ready to reopen. We are excited to take on the new season and embrace a new norm.  We want our guests to feel safe again vacationing.

From what you have witnessed, what do you wish people would do more of to help this pandemic come to a quick end?
DR: It seems like a lot of people are doing the basics. Social distancing and what they are supposed to be doing to stay safe. I think it’s also important to stay calm and stay focused!

Who would you like to shine a positive spotlight on because of their valiant efforts during this pandemic?
DR: Doctors and nurses. Their work on the front lines is commendable.
