Plan a Trip to Roanoke Island This Summer!

Child visits museumWhile staying at Surf Side Hotel this summer, we recommend you take a day trip to nearby Roanoke Island! The island is home to interactive historical site, Roanoke Island Festival Park, and hosts many exciting attractions and events each day. Here are some of our favorites:

Roanoke Adventure Museum

Roanoke Adventure Museum is home to exhibits that both kids and adults will love. Let your kids dress up in 16th century styles while you learn all about the history of the Outer Banks. Learn about ship wrecks throughout the years, piracy in the 18th century, how to navigate with the North Star and more!

American Indian Town

Visit the island’s newest exhibit to learn about Native American history and see what the community that the Roanoke settlers stumbled upon might have looked like. Two longhouses are located at the site, the larger of which is over 30 feet long! Learn about 16th century Native American farming techniques, as well as what the relationship between the native people and the settlers was like. This informative and interactive exhibit is perfect for active kids, and provides a great learning experience about our country’s history.

Children’s Shows

These fun and family-friendly shows are held at 10:30 a.m. on most Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays of the summer. Tickets are $5 per person (children five and under are free) and can be purchased at the island’s ticket sales office ahead of time or on the morning of the show. Each week is a different performance, so be sure to find out which will be in town during your visit! Click here for show dates and information.

Roanoke Island Festival Park is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located just five miles from Nags Head. Book your stay at Surf Side Hotel here, then head to the park’s site to learn more about its many summer activities!
