Planning Your Holiday Vacation in Nags Head

Planning Your Holiday Vacation in Nags Head

OBX holiday vacation When it comes to vacationing in Nags Head, North Carolina, there really is no “wrong” season to visit. Whether you stay with us here at Surf Side Hotel during the spring, summer, winter or fall there is plenty of fun to be had and an incredible ocean view to be enjoyed!

For families planning a December getaway to the Outer Banks, we are happy to say that there is just as much to do as if you were visiting in the middle of summer; just with fewer tourists!

Our favorite December events are those that focus on the holiday season, and there are plenty of them to participate in throughout the month.

November 25 – January 20: WinterLights at The Elizabethan Gardens

All throughout the holiday season The Elizabethan Gardens is illuminated in bright, festive colors and decorations. Take a walk through with your family to celebrate the season!

The event takes place Tuesdays through Saturdays in December, as well as Fridays and Saturdays in January.

December 2: 13th Annual Holiday Tour of Homes

The Holiday Tour of Homes will kick off at the Outer Banks Distillery at 12 p.m. before you head to different historic island homes and other buildings that are festively decorated throughout the area. You will be able to walk through many of the homes to see what they are all about. Those who arrive early enough can use a bike, donated by Manteo Cyclery, to ride during the duration of the tour.

December 8: 4th Annual Holiday Chefs Challenge

Want to watch a group of Outer Banks chefs compete for the title of “Prince/Princess of Canned Goods”? The Holiday Chefs Challenge is the place to do it! At 6 p.m. on December 8th, chefs will gather at the Duck Woods Country Club in Southern Shores and attempt to cook an entire dish only using items typically found in the Beach Food Pantry, including one canned good. Guests will be treated to hors d’oeuvres, two beverages, music, and more!

December 9: Great White Fishmas

The most festive event of the year, Great White Fishmas is an opportunity for your children to explore what lies beneath the sea while getting in the holiday spirit. Hosted at North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island, this daylong event offers fun and excitement for the whole family.

Visit the museum between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 9 to meet with Santa and Mrs. Claus while playing games and creating festive crafts. You’ll even get to see Santa Claus dive into the water in the Graveyard of the Atlantic.

December 17 – 31: Poulos Family Christmas

Hoping to see a festive light display during your holiday vacation to Nags Head? One of the most incredible ones in the country is just ten minutes away in nearby Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina! Featured on both The Today Show and HGTV, this beautiful light show is a one-of-a-king Outer Banks experience.

Just head to Ocean Acres Drive during the month of December to see the breathtaking display in person!

December 31: New Year in the New World

If you have yet to finalize your New Years Eve plans, we think you should attend the inaugural New Year in the New World celebration! Downtown Manteo is closing the streets so that everyone can gather for live music, family-friendly activities and an early ball drop for the kids! Don’t worry, the fun won’t stop as soon as the ball drops. There will be local food vendors and the downtown restaurants and bars will be open late. To top off the night, experience a full-on fireworks show that is choreographed to music!

Waiting till the last minute to book your holiday getaway? We still have a few rooms available at Surf Side Hotel and would love to see you here!

I HAVE LOVED MY STAY AT SURFSIDE. IT IS A FAMILY HOTEL WITH A 10PM CURFEW ON NOISE. THE STAFF IS FRIENDLY, THE ROOMS ARE CLEAN, THERE IS A WINE GET-TO -GATHER AT THE FRONT DESK AREA, INTERNET AVAILABLE, AND A NICE BREAKFAST INCLUDED IN THE ROOM RATE.

A SWIMMING POOL AND HOT TUB IS LOCATED IN IT’S OWN SEPARATE BUILDING WITH SHOWERS FOR AFTERWARDS.

I NOW HAVE A 20LB RAT TERROR AND WISH HE WOULD BE ALLOWED TO TRAVEL WITH ME. HE IS POTTY TRAINED AND SO SWEET.
